You Can’t Study Where You Sleep

With the new school year quickly approaching, let’s talk about boundaries. Not your typical relationship boundaries, but boundaries for yourself and your mind. Most people have heard that using your phone in bed is unhealthy because it inhibits your brain from connecting your bed to going to sleep. If you didn’t know that, now you do. Like your phone and your bed, your brain needs to separate spaces of work and rest. If you’re up until 2 am writing last-minute papers in your room all the time, that negative energy will linger. Even worse if you work in your bed. Your brain will start to associate the space with stress. With that in mind, here are 3 places that are ten times better than slaving away at your desk in your room every day.

1. At School

This is probably your best option because you could avoid having to do work outside of school at all. You can study with friends and collaborate, or you can find your own space and get to work. I would suggest going to your school’s library or if your school has other seating areas, go there. This is best for short homework assignments or leftover classwork.

2. Local Cafes

This is my personal favorite because you can grab a study snack or a drink to keep you going. I would suggest cafes for when you need long study sessions. Bring AirPods or headphones so you can drown out any unwanted conversation around you. This is best for studying outside of school and group reviewing with friends and classmates.

 3. Local Libraries

The libraries are for the people who don’t want to talk and focus on their work entirely. They can be good for group work too if you are all working separately but are together in case of questions. This is best for exam season when everyone is studying at different paces, but you still have the ability to ask questions with one another.

Going to these places is great, but make sure you continue to change the location every once and awhile. Or even assigning different subjects different spaces. Whatever works for you and your schedule. Getting out and doing work in different spaces can help you keep a clear mind and make your own space more calming and peaceful. Even just working in a different room in your house is better than trying to complete everything in your bedroom. The next time you’re about to sit down in your room and do work, think about how angry you’ll be when you start thinking about doing work when you’re try to get some sleep.
