Busy Lives

It’s been a while, let’s talk about it.

When life gets busy, we tend to just go through the motions of life. We forget to take time to take care of ourselves, enjoy our hobbies, and hang out with the people we love. If the last few months have taught me anything, it’s that you cannot forget to take care of yourself and your well-being. It’s very easy to lose yourself in your to-do list and focus on everything around you. When you are busy with back-to-back tasks you don’t realize you never took time for yourself once you lay in bed. Then you spend hours scrolling on your phone as a ‘reward’ for all your hard work. I am also guilty of choosing hours on my phone when I really should be getting sleep so I can keep up with my schedule. Many teenagers don’t realize how important sleep is, including myself. Without sleeping enough your brain gets foggy and you make simple mistakes because you aren’t thinking clearly. There have been many times in class when my answer makes no sense, or I don’t understand a problem because I just can’t think. Sleep is the number one thing to prioritize when you are busy. Skip the scrolling and get a few extra hours because you have no idea how much you need them.

Another thing is trying to fit in your hobbies to bring some joy back into your life. When you are busy life becomes mundane and repetitive. That hobby can be a short workout to get your body moving or a couple chapters of your favorite book. Spending a part of your day doing something for you when your life feels out of your control helps ground yourself and reset.

In my experience, I tend to lose myself in my tasks and let them consume me. It becomes the only thing I spend my time on. I feel too exhausted to work out. I think that reading will take too much brain power. Staying busy can be nice, but taking the time to let your brain reset can improve your performance in whatever is keeping you busy. Working long hours might be productive, but you are unable to do your best work. You have to sleep enough and take meaningful breaks to get rid of that mental fog. Just because you are busy doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy life. Make sure to have that balance when your life gets busy. Do what you need to do while making the most of your downtime and take care of yourself.
